The Honeycutts of Blackthorne Review

The Honeycutts of Blackthorne

By James R. Campbell

West Texas Sheriff Woodrow “Booger” Burkett is in a quandary that just keeps getting worse. Married, he’s having an affair with the wife of Blackthorne’s most notorious criminal when she is found dead, the victim of a contract killing. An outlaw biker gang, the Ghosts of the Confederate Dead, is implicated, and the investigation pulls Burkett into a dark world of intrigue and violence. Can he find the way out with his honor and dignity intact? The answer lies in his own heart, and the denouement of “The Honeycutts of Blackthorne” by West Texas newspaperman James R. Campbell may astonish you. Done in Campbell’s inimitable style of naturalistic super realism, it will take you deep into Blackthorne’s farm, ranch and oil country where the cicadas are always singing and another tale of passion and tragedy is always on the way.

MY HONEST REVIEW OF The Honeycutts

Rita Honeycutt was tired of being abused by her husband White Eye. So she left him and filed for divorce. White Eye and his dad Hound Dog were afraid Rita would get half of the farm that’s been in the Honeycutt family for decades, in the divorce. And they were well-known for their low-down, underhanded dealings. As Sheriff Burkett and Rita have history, it’s up to him to make sure that Rita doesn’t get killed unexpectedly before her divorce.

This story was filled with dark humor throughout. I really liked the character of Sheriff Burkett, and was pulling for him all the way. The motorcycle gang was funnier than the Honeycutts. These characters kept me laughing with just about everything they did and said. The story took a few unexpected turns but I was happy with the outcomes, just didn’t expect it to happen. I would absolutely read more from this author.
